Science

We encourage the children to develop an active curiosity about the world in which they live.  While the children are in Reception they are introduced to Science through a cross curricular programme of ‘Knowledge and Understanding the World’.  Areas of study include: all about me and my family, under the sea, farms and farm animals, minibeasts and the seasons.  They also investigate other scientific ideas using a range of classroom equipment, including wheeled toys, sand and water.

In Years One and Two the children are encouraged to make observations, ask questions, suggest ideas and make comparisons.  They are given the opportunity to carry out their own investigations, make predictions and co-operate together by working safely.  Their interests and scientific skills are developed through studying topics which include: ourselves and other animals, health and growth, sounds, light and dark, forces and movement, electricity, sorting, using and changing materials, recycling and the earth and beyond.

Some of our educational trips have a scientific emphasis and these include visits to Holly Lodge Education Centre in Richmond Park, The Look Out Discovery Centre in Bracknell and Groombridge Place and the Enchanted Forest near Tunbridge Wells.
