PSHE

Such are the demands and pressures on the modern child that there has never been a more important time for the teaching of Personal, Social and Health Education together with Citizenship.

We develop an environment where the children feel safe and where they can openly discuss issues that are important to their development both as individuals and as members of society. Social and moral responsibility is developed through encouraging positive behaviour and relationships, anti-bullying strategies and environmental and citizenship projects.

In addition to one weekly lesson, there are also form periods where tutors help to promote some of the skills of personal development as part of their guidance role. There are many cross-curricular themes in other subjects, for example, literacy, the humanities, science and ICT. We also have assemblies, visiting speakers, citizenship courses and residential trips.

The knowledge, skills and understanding of the subject are taught in four interrelated themes:
  • Understanding yourself to increase self-awareness, promote confidence and develop responsibility
  • Promoting good health and developing a healthy and safer lifestyle
  • Developing effective relationships and respecting the differences between people
  • Preparing to play an active role as citizens
A range of teaching methods is used at Newland House to provide a breadth of effective learning opportunities for all pupils which includes an emphasis on active learning, enquiry, discussion, circle time, study skills and participation in citizenship activities.
