Maths
A strong mathematical foundation is established in the early years through a variety of practical experiences. From the start in Reception children are shown that there is a valid use for mathematics in everyday life. The skills of logical thought and reasoning which they learn are important tools in all aspects of their education. The basis for the mathematics planning in the pre prep is the Abacus scheme, but our approach towards teaching is many faceted and not bound by a prescriptive system, which can often be too narrow. We want the children to enjoy mathematics and they do this through puzzles and challenges or through practical topics such as weighing, measuring and shopping. Mathematics is taught by the children’s class teachers and, as with all subjects at the pre prep, pupils work at their own pace. Topics are constantly revisited and become easier with familiarity. Those who find some of the work demanding are given extra help, and those who show greater potential are suitably challenged. By the end of Year Two, the children begin to work more closely in whole class lessons, in preparation for the transition to the Prep school.
