Library
The school’s large and extensive library forms a valued central resource, providing a place for study and research as well as reading for pleasure. It contains over ten thousand items of stock, mainly books but also videos, CDs, cassettes and newspapers. Internet access is also available for children doing research. The library provides the latest titles in children’s literature as well as those well loved classics. Together
with a regularly updated non-fiction and extensive reference sections, reading, both for pleasure and research is actively encouraged.
The library is managed by a qualified Librarian who is always on hand to recommend a book or give advice on what to read next. She is supported by an enthusiastic team of pupil librarians who are selected at the beginning of the year and take great pleasure in being fully involved in all the many aspects of running a successful library.
All pupils, except those in the top two years, have a dedicated library lesson each week. They can borrow up to two books and two audio books at a time and the older pupils can also borrow a video or DVD.
Despite the ever growing pressures of the computerised age, a love of reading is very much alive and well at Newland House. The library runs many popular events which further encourage children’s love of literature. These include participation in national reading schemes and competitions, visiting readers, fun book quizzes, annual book fairs and visits by authors who have never failed to give inspirational talks.
