English

English is a core subject on which we place great importance in all aspects of language, both written and spoken. There has never been a greater need for children to be able to communicate effectively, both orally and through the written word. Skills learnt effectively at this age will prove essential as they grow and mature.

We aim to provide a structured scheme of work in which children address specific topics which enable them, not only to enjoy the subject but also to prepare for external entrance examinations where pupils often win English prizes awarded by senior schools.

There are many English-based activities outside the classroom which we believe help to inspire children’s creativity. Visiting authors weave their magic and, in the last few years, Malorie Blackman, William Nicholson and Bernard Ashley were especially popular. There are wonderful book fairs, quizzes and other events to promote both the fun and importance of reading.

Children are encouraged to take part in poetry competitions and festivals. The Debating Society proves a popular forum for boys and girls who are eager to discuss topical issues. There is equal passion for the recently formed Reading Group where they are invited to read and discuss the latest children’s fiction. We also put on two plays each year, host visiting theatre groups and take part in drama workshops at venues such as the Globe Theatre.
