Art

At Newland House we want the children to enjoy Art and use it to express the imaginative, creative and personal sides of their character.  We believe strongly that there are two separate but crucially interlinked elements to the subject.  In the craft based side children are taught to explore, colour, pattern, texture, line, tone, shape and form in a structured way in the hope that they obtain as complete a view of Art as possible.  As they move up through the school they revisit these core elements as they learn how to work successfully with different media and materials.  We encourage them to gain real pleasure in developing their skills, responding sensitively to the world they see, while learning to evaluate and critically discuss their own work.

They are also encouraged to consider why people create Art and why it is important.  The pupils look at the wealth of knowledge and ideas that have gone before us in the world of Art and how they connect to contemporary pieces, including children’s work.  The study of artists’ work is often an important starting point for children and broadens and stimulates their own creativity.

There are a number of fun and stimulating activities that take part outside the standard curriculum, including art clubs and weekend activities, some of which are open to parents who can work alongside their children. There is an annual art exhibition together with a residential field trip for interested and talented older pupils. For further details of Art Challenges please click here.
