DT department continue to achieve great things

With success in the Ultimate Bridge Competition and then for the Eco Marathon team, the summer term finished on a high for the Design and Technology department.

The Institute of Materials Minerals and mining organised a competition to design a wooden bridge that had a high strength to weight ratio. Archie Coode, Thomas Hill, Arthur Hughes and Nico Taylor all from Year 6 formed the team. They worked hard over several months designing and testing various structures until they reached their final and winning bridge. A remarkable achievement especially as they were the youngest entrants.

For several years now Newland House have been a prominent entrant at the Shell Eco-marathon Youth Challenge. This year the event took place on 29th and 30th June at Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby. The team consisted of pupils from Years 6 to 8 (Mark Adshead, James Bannon, William Burden, Edwin Jarret-Barnham, Christian Jones, Matthew Madden, Amelia Reddish and Nico Taylor). After months of hard work, teams from around the world consisting of schools and universities, drove their cars around a 10 mile course. Shell technicians then

calculated the mileage per gallon. Newland House achieved 1766 mpg which placed them first in the school entries and eleventh overall.

Congratulations to all those pupils who have spent many hours during lunch times and after school committed to their DT interests. Of course none of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of Mr McGovern and Mr Hopkins.
